Thursday the 6th of June marked the grand re-opening of an iconic Victorian pub ‘The Brewery Tap' Derby's Royal Standard’, on Derwent Street, Derby Brewing Company's first pub.
Derby County legend Roger Davies officially opened the pub, which dates back to 1862. Roger Protz editor of the Good Pub guide and acclaimed UK beer writer was on hand to pull the first pint. They were also joined by key figures from the food & drink industry.
Situated on the banks of the River Derwent, the Victorian pub, which dates back to 1862, is one of the oldest pubs in Derby. It has a colourful history, with Queen Victoria said to have enjoyed a drink in the lounge bar and landlords including three generations of the Parnell family.
The pub was saved from developers and has since been transformed through a £200k renovation, which has taken only six months to complete. Work included sandblasting paint off exterior walls, revealing the original brick and stone and refurbishing the original windows. The pub now boasts a new bar area, courtyard, an upstairs area that can be hired out and a well-appointed balcony with impressive views across the river.
Roger Protz acclaimed UK beer writer & editor of the good pub guide, said: "The Brewery Tap" is a landmark Derby pub and I'm delighted that it is back open. The Derby Brewing Company has worked really hard and they’ve done an excellent job. I am looking forward to having a drink in the sunshine, relaxing on the balcony and looking out across the river.”
Trevor Harris, founder of the Derby Brewing Company, added: "It was important to restore the pub sympathetically and bring it back to its former glory. We are delighted with the result and look forward to offering a selection of the finest beers, wines & spirits from around the world and hand selected ales from around the UK.”
“We have introduced a traditional menu in keeping with the pub's style, featuring homemade classics such as beer battered fish with hand cut chips and a trio of Cumberland sausages with mash, all made from locally sourced produce. We will also be offering live music on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. We are confident the new pub will be a welcome addition to the town centre and local economy and look forward to our next project.”
